Second Grade Class News
Everyone has brought home two butternut squash plants in a plastic cup. They were started by seeds from a squash I ate for dinner one evening, and were planted in potting soil. Then, they were placed on our class window ledges. If you plant them in a larger area you may grow squash to eat!
Also, some children brought home yam plants. We took yams, cut them and placed the cut end in water held up by toothpicks to root. Some of the yams were just placed whole in the water. They have potential to grow into beautiful, full leafy plants even producing yams to eat by the fall. Just replant them in your garden or a larger pot or window box. Make sure they are watered all summer long. Before the first frost you should find some yams! Unfortunately, not all the yams rooted or began to grow leaves. A few extra yams will be started. My goal is that by the end of the year, everyone will bring one home. The children just love to watch plants grow!
